About This Tour

Brooklyn's streets, parks and institutions were shaped by women whose names rarely reached the history books. This walk crosses Crown Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Prospect Heights and Fort Greene to meet eight of them: an artist who saved a free Black community's houses, a curator who ran the world's earliest children's museum for thirty-five years, a developer who worked beside her architect husband, a builder whose permits carried only her initials, an organizer who saved a tree and built a movement, a neighborhood leader whose renewal plan became a city block of new buildings, an educator whose name replaced a slaveholding family's on a school, and a physician who opened hospitals staffed by women. The tour is made for walking, with no driving needed. Choose a short, medium or long version, and pause and resume whenever you like. Several stops are private homes or an active school, so please view them from the public sidewalk and keep your voices low. Hours change, and some places close on Mondays or Tuesdays, so check before you go.
