About This Tour

Long before the borough had streets, Native peoples including the Matinecock and the Canarsee lived and traveled across what is now Queens. This tour follows traces of that history through place names, a historic road, a memorial burial ground and the wetlands that once covered the land. Some stops have deep documentation and others carry questions that historians still debate, and the tour says which is which. You can choose a short, medium or long route, and you can pause and resume at any time.

Tour Highlights

Walk the avenue that follows an old Native trail
Visit a memorial burial ground with names engraved in stone
Learn how place names point to the first peoples of Queens
