About This Tour

Trace the footsteps of the writers, musicians and artists who gave Greenwich Village, the East Village and Chelsea their reputation for creativity. This tour covers taverns, coffeehouses, theaters and hotels, from a folk club where Bob Dylan first performed in 1961 to a jazz club where Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane played in 1957. You will hear about the people who lived and worked here, and about how the buildings themselves changed: a sailors' home became a hotel, a telephone laboratory became housing for artists, and a Yiddish theater became a concert hall. Some of the places on the route have closed or changed, and the narration says so, so you will know what to expect at each stop.
