About This Tour

This walk visits nine historic houses of worship across the Bronx. They include a fieldstone church built in 1840-41, a Catholic parish with a Lourdes grotto, a rustic suburban church from a planned 1880s neighborhood, and a Gothic Revival church consecrated in 1927. The congregations are Episcopal, Baptist, Catholic, Congregational and Reformed, and the buildings span Gothic Revival, Romanesque Revival, Richardsonian Romanesque and Queen Anne styles. Along the way you will see churchyards with graves from the colonial era, windows by Tiffany Studios, terra-cotta panels by the English sculptor George Tinworth, and a congregation chartered in 1696. These are active houses of worship, so please be respectful of services. Some buildings are open only at set times, so check with each church before planning to go inside. The exteriors can be seen from the street.
