About This Tour

Brooklyn Heights sits on a bluff above the East River. On November 23, 1965, it became the earliest neighborhood designated as a historic district in New York City. This walk visits nine places: the bridge and its Brooklyn-side approach, a former newspaper building tied to Walt Whitman, the waterfront promenade, a church with a role in the antislavery movement, a harbor-view mansion, a former hotel, a church with early figural stained glass, and the former home of the borough's historical society. Together they show how a ferry-connected residential neighborhood grew into a landmarked district, and how a fight over a highway produced the promenade. The streets are residential, so please view private houses from the sidewalk.
