Trinity Church Cemetery: Founders & Founding
About This Tour
Trinity Churchyard surrounds Trinity Church at Wall Street and Broadway. The current church, designed by Richard Upjohn in the Gothic Revival style, was consecrated in 1846, but the burial ground is older. Trinity's list of notable burials includes a treasury secretary, a printer, a steamboat developer and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. This short walk visits thirteen graves and monuments. They include Alexander Hamilton and his family, a spy who worked for George Washington, the printer of New York's first newspaper, and a catechist who taught enslaved people in the early eighteenth century. It also takes in three larger memorials: a cross for a Gilded Age society leader, a bronze statue of a Revolutionary-era congressman, and a monument to men who died in British prisons. Some graves are unmarked or have been moved, and the narration says where that is the case.
