Woodlawn Cemetery: Jazz, Titans & Trailblazers
About This Tour
Woodlawn Cemetery opened in 1863, covers more than 400 acres in the Bronx and has more than 300,000 burials. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011. This walk visits the graves and mausoleums of fifteen people: entrepreneurs, journalists, songwriters, jazz musicians, a salsa singer, a suffragist, a frontier lawman turned sportswriter and a mayor. Several rest in private mausoleums, including a granite temple and an Egyptian Revival tomb guarded by sphinxes. The grounds are open daily from 8:30am to 4:30pm, and the cemetery asks visitors to call ahead in bad weather. Recreational activities are strictly limited out of respect for those buried here, and personal photography is allowed.
