About This Tour

Green-Wood Cemetery opened in 1838 and now covers 478 acres of hills, ponds and monuments in Brooklyn. By the early 1860s it drew more than 500,000 visitors a year, and it became a National Historic Landmark in 2006. This loop visits 18 places and ends where it begins, at the main gate: the graves of inventors, publishers, artists, a composer and a political boss, along with a landscape meant to be walked through, an underground vault complex and a hilltop with Revolutionary War history. Each stop gives dates and sources, and says plainly where a detail is uncertain. The grounds are large and hilly, so wear comfortable shoes and allow several hours. Opening hours apply to the whole cemetery, so check them before you go.
