About This Tour

Addisleigh Park, in the western part of St. Albans, Queens, became one of New York's best-known African American neighborhoods by the early 1950s. The Landmarks Preservation Commission designated it a historic district on February 1, 2011, protecting about 422 buildings built mostly between the 1910s and the 1930s. This walk looks at the district's covenant history and at homes tied to musicians and athletes who lived here, including jazz figures and baseball players. The houses are private residences, so every stop is a view from the street. Where a street address is not documented in the sources, the stop says so. Choose the short, medium or long option to fit your time, and pause and resume whenever you like. Every stop lists its sources.
