Mansions of the Bronx
About This Tour
This walk visits five historic houses in the Bronx. They include a fieldstone house from 1748-49 that served as a headquarters during the Revolutionary War, a farmhouse built in 1758, a small cottage where Edgar Allan Poe lived in the 1840s, a Greek Revival mansion completed by 1842, and a Hudson River estate whose house dates to 1843. The houses sit in parks and neighborhoods across the borough, and each is tied to a different part of its history: colonial farming families, enslaved people who worked on the estates, Gilded Age owners, and a mayor who ran the city from a mansion for one summer. Several are open only a few days a week, so check each site's hours before you go.
