About This Tour

This walk follows Riverside Drive and Broadway through a group of apartment houses, a Civil War monument and a cultural campus, most of them built between about 1900 and 1930. It runs from Washington Heights in the north to West 71st Street in the south. The buildings show how developers brought European styles to New York apartment living. You will see Beaux-Arts designs, Renaissance Revival designs and one Art Deco tower, along with an Arts and Crafts building with Western and Mesoamerican motifs. Many were built as apartment hotels, and most are private residences today, so the walk is about looking up from the sidewalk.
