About This Tour

This walk visits twelve churches in Manhattan, from a Georgian chapel finished in 1766 to a Harlem church and a riverside tower completed in the 1920s and 1930s. They show how congregations from different traditions built in stone in a growing city: Gothic Revival, Romanesque Revival, Georgian and Classical Revival designs, with stained glass, carved reredoses and organs. Several have also been settings for civic history, from a presidential inauguration day in 1789 to a 1967 speech on the Vietnam War. Hours change often, so check each church's website before you plan a visit, and expect that some are closed for services or events.
