About This Tour

This walk visits places tied to the early years of hip-hop in the Bronx, including the recreation room where DJ Kool Herc played a back-to-school party in August 1973. You will see a public housing development where one of the culture's best-known organizations took shape, a neighborhood playground that hosted park jams, the site of a South Bronx nightclub that welcomed early DJs and MCs, a large park with a 1930s pool, a boulevard whose lampposts carry the names of Bronx honorees, and a free art museum. The museum planned to tell the story of hip-hop is also on the route. Most stops are in residential neighborhoods, so please keep noise down and respect residents.
