About This Tour

This walk looks at twelve buildings and monuments in Downtown Brooklyn and nearby, built between the 1840s and the 1950s. Most are Beaux-Arts or Art Deco landmarks. A few, including a Greek Revival city hall, a Romanesque Revival department store, a Romanesque Revival fire headquarters and post office, and a postwar office building, show the styles the others grew out of or moved toward. Each stop gives the architects, dates, materials and landmark status, with sources, and notes what the building is used for today. Several are now apartments, offices or university space, so views are from the sidewalk unless a stop lists public hours.
