About This Tour
Harlem's jazz history is spread across basements, ballrooms, a theater and an apartment building, and some of the places are gone. This walk visits a mix of working venues, landmarked buildings and sites where the building has been replaced. Each stop is described from documented dates and names, including clubs that admitted mostly white audiences while Black musicians played on stage, and the few that did not.
Tour Highlights
A National Historic Landmark apartment building where a great bandleader lived for 22 years
The corner where a famous nightclub kept a Black orchestra on stage and mostly white patrons in the seats
The site of a block-long ballroom where the Lindy Hop developed
A basement club that was Black-owned and racially integrated when other major clubs were not
A Harlem theater with one of the longest-running amateur nights in the country, closed for renovation and due to reopen in late 2026
