Walk Smart

Before You Walk: 7 Essentials

A little preparation goes a long way. Here's how to stay safe, comfortable, and energized on every Amble tour.

1.Wear Proper Footwear

Choose supportive, well-fitting walking shoes with good cushioning and arch support. Replace them every 300–500 miles, and break in new shoes on short walks before tackling longer routes.

2.Stay Hydrated

Drink water before, during, and after your walk. Aim for 16 oz about two hours before you head out, and carry a reusable bottle — especially on hot or humid NYC summer days.

3.Stretch Before & After

Spend 5–10 minutes stretching before you start and after you finish. Warm muscles stretch more safely, so a brief easy walk before stretching can help prevent injury.

4.Dress for the Weather

Check the forecast and layer appropriately. In summer, wear light-colored, breathable fabrics and sunscreen. In winter, layer up and protect extremities with gloves and a hat.

5.Start Slow & Build Gradually

If you're new to walking, begin with 15–20 minute walks and increase duration by no more than 10% per week. Consistency matters more than distance — a daily short walk beats an occasional long one. Remember, you can pause any Amble tour and resume it later from where you left off — especially handy on routes covering 10 miles or more, which you can split across multiple days.

6.Listen to Your Body

Stop and rest if you feel pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath. Soreness is normal; sharp or persistent pain is not. Know your limits and don't push through discomfort.

7.Carry the Essentials

Bring a small bag with water, your phone, a snack for longer walks, and any personal medications. A lightweight reflective vest or armband light improves visibility at dusk or dawn.
